Nintendo’s game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, announced at E3 today that a new Super Mario will be released this holiday season.  No, not Super Mario: Galaxy 2(although, that was announced also), but a new Co-op side-scrolling Mario with a lick of good ol’ 8-bit-ness.

Shigeru has said that up to 4 players (Mario, Luigi and 2 mushroom dudes) can play through the game together, but with a little twist.  You can pick up other players and toss them to solve puzzles, gain access to other areas or just flat out be obnoxious and throw them into enemies/pits/turtle shells or whatever else suits your fancy. (i vote 3rd option).

The game is packed with power-ups, but the two new ones are a propeller suit and a penguin suit. The propeller suit is pretty straight forward, it plops a propeller on your head and lets you sort of drift around the screen after jumps. The penguin suit, though, is classic Miyamoto design. When you pop this bad boy on, Mario waddles instead of walking. He can also shoot across the screen on his belly. Finally, Mario gets the ability to shoot ice balls, which bounce across they screen until they hit something and freeze it into an ice block. Once frozen you can use the block as a stepping stone.

At least Nintendo is going the right direction with multiplayer.  Have you ever tried to play Super Mario: Galaxy multiplayer? … ” *waves the Wiimote* “HERE LEMME TAP YOUR ASS SO YOU CAN JUMP A LITTLE HIGHER GOGO!”

I will definitely be picking this one up come winter.

It looks chaotic to me, but Super Smash Bros multi-player is chaotic as well.
